Painted between 1858 and 1859, The Boy with Cherries (Gamin aux Cerises) is one of Édouard Manet’s most moving early character studies. The model was Alexandre, a fifteen-year-old boy hired by Manet to clean his studio brushes and run errands in Paris. Drawing inspiration from 17th-century Spanish genre scenes by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and Dutch master works, Manet framed the boy leaning over a parapet wearing a red cap, his apron brimming with ripe cherries. Tragically, shortly after the painting was completed, the young boy took his own life in Manet’s studio—an event that deeply traumatized the artist and inspired Charles Baudelaire’s famous prose poem Le Corde (The Rope). Preserved today in the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, this masterpiece remains an enduring symbol of youth, innocence, and early modern Realism.
