Painted during the summer of 1890 in the small port town of Gravelines near the Belgian border, The Channel at Gravelines, Evening (Gravelines, un soir) is one of Georges Seurat’s four monumental coastal canvases completed during his final summer before his premature death in early 1891. Depicting a deserted harbor channel at dusk, Seurat anchored the composition with an anchor on the grassy bank, a tall white lighthouse in the distance, and the motionless sea stretching toward the horizon. Through precise, systematic dabs of cool violets, pale blue-greens, and warm sunset ochres, Seurat created a transcendent sense of silence and mathematical order, bordered by his signature custom-painted Pointillist frame.
