Painted in Paris in 1894 following Paul Gauguin’s return from his first Tahitian expedition, Day of the Gods (Mahana no atua) is one of the most celebrated Synthetist and Symbolist works in modern art history. Synthesizing his memories, imagination, and Polynesian mythology, Gauguin divided the composition into three distinct horizontal zones. At the top, a massive stone deity (representing the goddess Hina) presides over worshippers dancing and carrying offerings. In the center, three figures lie in birth, life, and death poses along the beach. In the foreground, Gauguin created a revolutionary liquid expanse of water composed of brilliant, organic pools of violet, cadmium yellow, vermilion, and turquoise. Housed in the Art Institute of Chicago, this painting stands as a triumphant masterpiece of modern abstraction and mythical vision.

Studio Craftsmanship & Quality Highlights

  • 100% Hand-Painted Cloisonnist Technique: Meticulously hand-crafted with rich, saturated oil color fields, crisp dark contours, and sinuous abstract water reflections by master painters specializing in late 19th-century French Post-Impressionism.

  • Vivid Color & Symbolic Fidelity: Faithfully reproduces the monumental stone idol, the three central allegorical nudes, and the swirling, jewel-toned water reflections of the original 1894 canvas.

  • Archival Fine Art Materials: Crafted on heavy-duty, archival linen canvas with lightfast oil pigments designed to retain permanent color brilliance, depth, and structural stability across generations.

  • Rigorous Quality Control: Every finished canvas undergoes multi-stage studio evaluation under specialized daylight-balanced lighting to ensure exact color saturation, spatial balance, and historic character.

Recommended Space Placement

  • Modern Living Rooms & Feature Accent Walls: Serves as a dramatic, luminous centerpiece that commands attention and elevates contemporary or classic interiors.

  • Private Libraries & Creative Studios: Infuses reading rooms and creative workspaces with profound art-historical significance, spiritual mysticism, and expressive color energy.

  • Curated Collector Salons & Modern Galleries: Commands attention in formal entertainment or professional spaces with its undeniable museum heritage and bold visual presence.
