Commissioned by John Fisher, the Bishop of Salisbury and Constable’s close friend and patron, Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop’s Grounds (1823) is one of the most celebrated icons of British Romanticism. Constable cleverly used the arching branches of ancient trees to form a natural Gothic frame around the towering cathedral spire. The inclusion of grazing cattle, a peaceful stream, and figures in the lower left corner balances divine architecture with serene pastoral life.
