About this painting

This is a hand-painted oil interpretation, not the original Annabel Sleeping held in a private collection. Our Dafen studio artists capture the quiet, unguarded stillness of the sleeping figure and the painterly texture of Freud’s late working style.

Annabel Sleeping, completed between 1987 and 1988, is a sensitive genre painting from Lucian Freud’s late career. The sitter rests in sleep, her body relaxed and unposed, free from the self-awareness of a modelled portrait. The composition is informal and closely framed, focusing on the weight and fall of flesh in repose. Freud avoids sentimentality, observing the sleeping form with his characteristic direct, unidealised gaze.

Colour, Brushwork and Emotional Mood

The palette is earthy and grounded, built from nuanced flesh tones, warm neutrals and soft muted background shades. Brushwork is thick, substantial and tactile, building form layer by layer to convey the weight of the body. The mood is calm, private and unguarded. It records a fleeting, vulnerable moment of rest without theatrical drama.

Hand-Painted Reproduction Focus

Our Dafen artists create this as a hand-painted oil reproduction, not the original oil-on-canvas work in a private collection. Painters pay close attention to the heavy impasto texture, subtle tonal shifts across the skin and the quiet slackness of a sleeping figure. Each hand-painted piece carries subtle natural variations in brushwork and blending; no digital print is used.

Interior Styling Suggestions

This quiet, intimate late Freud work suits low-key, sophisticated interiors. It pairs beautifully with warm taupe, stone grey or soft beige walls. It works well as a delicate accent piece in a study, bedroom or gallery wall grouping with other Lucian Freud portraits. Gentle, diffused lighting showcases the rich surface texture and subtle tonal gradations.
