About this painting

This is a hand-painted oil interpretation, not the original Landscape with Birds held in a private collection. Our Dafen studio artists capture the uncanny, dreamlike serenity of this rare early surreal landscape, far removed from Freud’s later figurative portraits.

Landscape with Birds, painted in 1940, is a rare early surrealist landscape by Lucian Freud. The scene pairs a stylised natural landscape with birds placed within the quiet setting. It does not seek to replicate nature realistically. Instead, Freud shapes the scenery into a staged, otherworldly vision, typical of his youthful surrealist explorations. This piece belongs to his formative experimental phase, before he turned his focus to the intimate, unflinching portraiture that defined his career.

Colour, Brushwork and Emotional Mood

The palette is soft and low-key, composed of muted earth greens, pale ochres and subdued cool tones. Brushwork is smooth, precise and restrained, with crisp, delicate outlines, unlike the heavy impasto of his mature paintings. The mood is still, enigmatic and gently surreal. Birds and landscape coexist in a suspended, quiet space, evoking a dreamlike detachment from ordinary reality.

Hand-Painted Reproduction Focus

Our Dafen artists create this as a hand-painted oil reproduction, not the original oil-on-canvas work in a private collection. Painters faithfully preserve the refined smooth finish, subtle colour harmony and mysterious, tranquil aura of the scene. Each hand-painted piece carries subtle natural variations in brushwork and blending; no digital print is used.

Interior Styling Suggestions

This intimate small-scale landscape suits gentle, elegant interiors. It pairs beautifully with off-white, pale sage or warm light taupe walls. It works wonderfully as a delicate accent for a study, reading nook or gallery wall grouping alongside other early Freud works such as Box of Apples in Wales and Memory of London. Soft, even lighting brings out its subtle tonal nuances.
