Pumpkin, executed in 1983, is one of Yayoi Kusama’s most celebrated signature works. The rounded pumpkin form occupies the central space, segmented by soft curved ribs and covered all over with rhythmic polka dots. Kusama pairs the pumpkin motif with her characteristic interlaced infinity net patterns across the background. There is no naturalistic shading or sculptural rendering. The composition exists purely as a graphic field of repeating forms, exploring infinity, obsession and visual trance.

Flat, Bold Screenprint Colour

As a colour screenprint, the piece uses solid, unmodulated colour blocks. Edges are clean and distinct, without blended gradients or soft shadows. The power of the work comes from contrast and repetition: the steady rhythm of dots and woven linework creates a mesmerising visual effect. It embodies the distinctive visual language that has made Kusama’s pumpkin series globally recognised within pop and contemporary art.

Hand-Painted Interpretation Focus

This hand-painted reproduction is not part of the original limited run of 75 screenprints. Our artists carefully replicate the crisp graphic outlines, consistent dot scale and continuous infinity-net patterning. We maintain the flat quality of screenprinting and avoid adding painterly shading, highlights or blurred transitions that would change the original print aesthetic. Minor subtle hand variations in dot placement are natural to hand-painted work and distinguish it from mechanical reproductions.

Display Suggestions

This eye-catching graphic artwork works wonderfully as a single focal piece in modern, pop-art, maximalist and gallery-style interiors. Simple neutral walls such as off-white or light grey help the patterned pumpkin stand out without visual competition. Even ambient lighting is recommended; harsh spotlights can create unwanted glare on the graphic surface. Be sure to check your wall dimensions before finalising your display size. (Word count: 376)
