Housed in the prestigious Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Design for a Theater Curtain (Entwurf zu einem Theatervorhang, 1883) is an exceptional early decorative masterpiece created by twenty-one-year-old Gustav Klimt. Together with his brother Ernst Klimt and fellow artist Franz Matsch, Gustav founded the Künstlercompagnie (Artists’ Company), receiving prestigious commissions across the Austro-Hungarian Empire to decorate ceilings, proscenium arches, and theater curtains (including theaters in Reichenberg, Carlsbad, and Fiume). This draft showcases Klimt’s extraordinary command of architectural space, illusionistic curtain folds, classical architectural motifs, and allegorical figures representing Tragedy, Comedy, and Music. It serves as a vital bridge between Historicist theater decoration and the emerging decorative elegance of the Vienna Secession.
