Painted in 1896, First Communion (Premiére Communion / La primera comunión) was Pablo Picasso’s first large-scale academic painting presented to the public. Executed under the encouragement of his father, José Ruiz y Blasco (who modeled as the father in the background), the fourteen-year-old artist chose a solemn religious rite of passage as his subject. Featuring his sister Lola kneeling devoutly before an altar flanked by an acolyte and priest, the composition reflects classical academic mastery, rich drapery textures, and a harmonious balance between warm candlelight and cool ambient tones. The original canvas, proudly preserved in the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, stands as definitive proof of Picasso’s astonishing prodigy status before his modern transformations.
