Painted between 1914 and 1916 in Figueres, Catalonia, Fiesta in Figueres (Fiesta en Figueres) offers a charming window into Salvador Dalí’s early childhood environment. Created when Dalí was between ten and twelve years old, this lively genre painting captures local residents celebrating during a festive gathering in his hometown. Drawing inspiration from local Catalan tradition and French Impressionist color theory, the young Dalí used quick, expressive brushstrokes and a rich, sunlit color palette to portray moving figures, outdoor architecture, and fluttering festival decorations. Decades before establishing his surrealist world, this piece highlights Dalí’s acute observational skill and natural talent for capturing human animation and Mediterranean light.
