Painted around 1918 during his Early Years period (1917–1927), Portrait of Lucia (Retrato de Lucía) holds deep personal significance in the biography of Salvador Dalí. Lucia subtlely appears across several of fourteen-year-old Dalí’s early works as the beloved nanny who raised him in Figueres and Cadaqués. Departing from pure Impressionist landscape techniques, the young Dalí embraced Expressionism in this portrait, using bold impasto strokes, warm earthy tones, and compassionate lighting to capture the dignity and gentle spirit of his caregiver. This early figurative masterwork offers art collectors a rare, poignant glimpse into the intimate domestic world of the future Surrealist icon.
