Painted in 1919 during his Early Years period (1917–1927), Portrait of a Gipsy (Retrato de un gitano) marks an important milestone in fifteen-year-old Salvador Dalí’s figurative exploration. Drawing inspiration from modern Catalan Expressionism and Spanish character painting traditions, the young Dalí moved beyond Impressionist light studies to focus on emotional intensity and human psychology. Through energetic brushstrokes, dramatic shadows, and a rich palette of warm terracottas, deep ochres, and expressive background accents, Dalí captured the dignity and vivid personality of his sitter, showcasing the mature draftsmanship and psychological insight that later defined his Surrealist portraiture.
