Created between 1890 and 1891, Study for ‘The Circus’ (Étude pour ‘Le Cirque’) is the final oil preparatory work executed before Georges Seurat painted his monumental last canvas, The Circus, left unfinished at his tragic death in March 1891 at age 31. Set inside the famous Cirque Fernando in Paris, Seurat applied mathematician and aesthetician Charles Henry’s theories on emotion, line, and color—using upward-curving lines and bright warm yellows and reds to evoke joy and dynamic action. Through thousands of precise, optical Pointillist dots, Seurat captured the swirling motion of the performer, the ringmaster’s whip, and the rhythmic geometry of the spectator gallery.
