Painted between 1890 and 1891, The Circus (Le Cirque) was Georges Seurat’s last major work, left uncompleted upon his sudden death in March 1891 at the age of 31. Shown at the Salon des Indépendants just before his death, the painting represents the culmination of Seurat’s scientific aesthetic theories, influenced by Charles Henry’s principles of color and line. To convey joy, excitement, and movement, Seurat employed upward-slanting lines, sweeping curves, and warm primary colors—yellows, reds, and blues. From the white-faced clown holding back the curtain in the foreground to the leaping rider and whipping ringmaster, every element is woven into an intricate grid of thousands of optical Pointillist dots framed by a dark blue painted border.
