Painted between 1889 and 1890, Young Woman Powdering Herself (Jeune femme se poudrant) is the only major portrait executed by Georges Seurat depicting his secret companion and mistress, Madeleine Knobloch. Set within her private Parisian apartment, Knobloch sits before an ornate bamboo-style dressing table in a corseted bodice, holding a powder puff. Notably, in the small wall mirror on the left, Seurat originally painted a self-portrait; upon advice from a friend who warned it looked bizarre, Seurat painted over his own reflection with a vase of flowers on a bamboo table. The work showcases Seurat’s late Pointillist style—characterized by softer pastel hues, playful Rococo-inspired curvaceous forms, and a humorous, decorative linear rhythm.
