Completed in 1913 in Cologne, Untitled is an experimental cubist work from Max Ernst’s early period. Human figures and surrounding space are disassembled into sharp geometric blocks, overlapping and interweaving. Visual rhythm comes from the staggered edges, diagonal lines and alternating positive and negative planes. There are no smooth expressionist brushstrokes, nor the collage cut-outs of his later surrealist works. It is a pure formal exploration of cubist structure.
