Choose the Right Painting for Your Room

Studio notes / Living with art

Find the scale.
Leave room for feeling.

Start with the wall, the surrounding furniture and the distance from which you normally see the painting.

Try the proportions

A little planning.
A better fit.

Compare a painting against a wall. The rectangle represents the visible canvas; an outer frame adds to these dimensions.

A proportion sketch, not a measurement of your room. Measure the wall and the outer frame.

A simple wall study

Measure the visible space

Note the usable wall width, doors and furniture below the artwork. Mark the proposed outer dimensions with removable paper or tape. Walk back to your usual viewing position and look at the whole arrangement. Confirm both the painted canvas size and the frame’s outside dimensions before ordering; they are not the same measurement.

Think in shapes

A horizontal canvas can echo a long sofa or table. A vertical painting suits a narrower wall, while square canvases create a different rhythm in pairs or groups. Keeping a reference image’s proportions helps preserve its composition. A different shape may require cropping or extending the image, so agree that decision with the artist.

Connect color without matching everything

Repeat one color from the room or introduce a deliberate contrast. Tell us the atmosphere you want: quieter, warmer, brighter or more dramatic. A room photograph provides context, especially when daylight changes the wall color. The preview helps compare options, but material samples and measurements remain useful when the finish is important.

Include the frame and the group

A floating gap adds space around the canvas; a broader frame adds visual weight. Compare the available profiles on the product page and confirm actual frame photographs when needed. For a pair, triptych or larger art schedule, label each canvas and give the overall wall dimensions, desired gaps and finish. This keeps the whole collection in one clear brief.
