Painted around 1890 during the height of his mature period, Forest (Forêt) showcases Paul Cézanne’s radical approach to landscape painting. Rather than capturing fleeting atmospheric effects like his Impressionist contemporaries, Cézanne sought to reveal the underlying permanent geometry of nature. In this masterpiece, tree trunks, foliage, and earth are rendered through structured patches of coordinated color and overlapping planes, creating a deep, architectural sense of space. Preserved within the permanent collection of the White House in Washington, D.C., this canvas illustrates the pivotal transition where Post-Impressionism directly anticipated Cubism and modern art.
