Painted around 1860 when Paul Cézanne was in his early twenties and still living in Aix-en-Provence before moving to Paris, Landscape with Mill belongs to the artist’s legendary “Dark Period.” Long before developing the bright palettes of Impressionism and the geometric planes of Post-Impressionism, young Cézanne painted under the heavy, dramatic spell of Romanticism. Influenced by masters like Eugène Delacroix, this canvas features brooding earth tones, heavy pigment application (impasto), and an intense, moody atmosphere. Preserved in a private collection, this rare early landscape offers collectors an extraordinary glimpse into the psychological and artistic genesis of one of modern art’s founding fathers.
