Painted in 1873, Clearing (Sous-bois / La Clairière) dates from the very beginning of Paul Gauguin’s career, created while he was working as a successful Paris stockbroker and painting under the influence of Camille Pissarro and the Barbizon School. Before embarking on his radical Synthetist and Tahitian journeys, Gauguin spent weekends painting en plein air in the French countryside surrounding Paris. Housed in the Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Orléans, this early canvas displays Gauguin’s keen sensitivity to natural light, earthy greens, and subtle dappled shadows, revealing the foundational mastery of tone and texture that preceded his modern art revolution.
