Cologne Cathedral Window is the design created for the south transept stained glass of Cologne Cathedral. Richter adopted his colour-chart methodology, generating a grid of countless small coloured panes arranged by random selection. There is no iconography, no religious figure or prescribed symbolic scene. Instead, colour and chance become the core subject. The orderly grid framework contrasts sharply with the unpredictable distribution of hues across the field.
Optical Rhythm of Adjacent Colours
Drawing on Op Art principles, the work activates the viewer’s eye through colour contrast and proximity. Neighbouring squares alter each other’s apparent brightness and tone. When viewed from a distance, individual blocks merge into a shimmering, shifting surface; up close, the distinct identity of each colour square re-emerges. This shifting perceptual experience sits at the heart of Richter’s conceptual exploration of vision itself.
Hand-Painted Interpretation Focus
This hand-painted oil reproduction is not the original stained-glass window installation at Cologne Cathedral. Our painters aim to preserve the regular grid structure and the random distribution of colour patches. Care is taken to maintain clean, consistent divisions between colour blocks while retaining the organic quality of hand-mixed paint. Natural minor variations in tone distinguish it from digital prints. We do not attempt to replicate glass translucency, as this is an oil painting interpretation of the original design.
Display Suggestions
The grid-based piece works beautifully in spacious modern rooms, library spaces, gallery walls or quiet meditation areas. Plain neutral walls keep focus on the colour rhythm. It can serve as a large centrepiece or be paired with other Richter colour-chart works in a curated set. Moderate, even ambient lighting is ideal; direct strong spotlights may create distracting glare across the grid surface. Please measure your wall carefully before selecting your final display size.
