Housed in the Wien Museum in Vienna, Fable (Fabula, 1883) is one of Gustav Klimt’s earliest major allegorical commissions, created when he was twenty-one years old and working as part of the Künstlercompagnie (Artists’ Company). Created for the multi-volume publication Allegorien und Embleme edited by Martin Gerlach, the composition showcases Klimt’s flawless Neoclassical draftsmanship and academic training under Ferdinand Laufberger at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. At the center of the scene sits the youthful female personification of Fable, holding a quill to record Aesop-inspired animal tales. Surrounding her are carefully observed animals—including a fox gazing up at storks in a tree and small mice in the foreground—rendered with crisp naturalism and warm lighting long before Klimt’s transition into Secessionist symbolism.
