Originally commissioned by the University of Vienna in 1894 as part of a monumental three-part ceiling mural cycle (Philosophy, Medicine, and Jurisprudence), Medicine caused an immediate public and academic uproar upon its debut in 1901 due to its radical Symbolist departure from traditional academic optimism. At the center of the composition stood Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health, shown standing before a starry cosmic background draped in a serpentine snake and holding the Cup of Lethe. Rejecting clinical science in favor of the mystery of life, suffering, and death, Klimt bought back his controversial paintings in 1905 to escape public censure. Tragically, all three University ceiling canvases were destroyed in the fire at Immendorf Castle in May 1945 during the final days of World War II. Today, this legendary lost masterwork survives only through preparatory sketches, rare archival photographs, and museum-quality hand-painted reproductions.
