Painted in August 1882 during Van Gogh’s formative residency in The Hague, Cluster of Old Houses with the New Church in The Hague (Oude huizen met de Nieuwe Kerk te Den Haag) represents one of the artist’s earliest oil painting experiments on location. Encouraged by Hague School master Anton Mauve, Van Gogh set out to paint urban views directly from nature. In this composition, he contrasts the worn, organic forms of old neighborhood houses with the distant, towering structure of the 17th-century New Church (Nieuwe Kerk).
