Created during the final decade of J.M.W. Turner’s career ($c.\ 1840–1845$), Waves Breaking on a Lee Shore stands as a revolutionary masterpiece of early abstraction. In this intimate study, Turner strips away conventional nautical detail to focus entirely on the raw energy and motion of crashing surf against wooden breakwater posts. With its dreamy palette of sandy creams, subtle violet-pinks, and impasto white crests, this painting foreshadowed the Impressionist and Modernist movements by decades.
