Painted during Leonardo da Vinci’s first Milanese period at the court of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, La Belle Ferronnière (long believed to portray Sforza’s mistress Lucrezia Crivelli or Beatrice d’Este) is one of only four surviving female portraits by Leonardo. Preserved in the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the portrait takes its popular name from the delicate jewel headband (ferronnière) resting across her brow. Depicted behind a stone parapet in a striking three-quarter view, her intense, sideways glance and firm poise embody Leonardo’s revolutionary ability to convey both physical presence and inner mental state through subtle sfumato light and shadow modeling.
