Completed in 1971 in Paris, Commonplaces – Girls, Death and Devil is one of the key sheets from Max Ernst’s late Commonplaces series. Multiple cut-out figure fragments are placed deliberately across the plain paper background. Each piece retains its original cut border, without blending into a unified scene. Visual rhythm comes from the tension and spacing between the three groups of motifs: the young girls, the skeletal figure of death and the demonic form. There is no narrative climax; the meeting is frozen, passive and dreamlike.
Palette, Light and Understated Mood
The palette follows the faded quality of antique engravings: sepia, muted grey, pale off-white and dark ink lines. Light is completely flat, there is no modelled shadow or directional sunlight. All depth comes only from the overlapping collage layers. The mood is eerie and restrained. It is an old folk fable reworked by surrealism: innocence, death and evil gather calmly, without melodrama or terror.
Hand-Painted Interpretation Focus Points
This is a hand-painted oil reproduction, not the original paper collage. Our painters faithfully reproduce the hard cut edges of each scrap, the texture of aged printed lines and the low, faded tonal range. We avoid soft blending, volumetric lighting and heavy paint texture. Each hand-painted canvas carries minor natural variations in stroke and colour blending, which distinguishes handcrafted oil painting from flat printed reproductions.
Interior Styling Suggestions
This allegorical late collage fits library, art study and surrealism gallery spaces. A narrow black or light wood frame with a 留白卡纸衬边 works best, to honour its paper-origin. It is ideal exhibited together with other Commonplaces series collages. Soft, indirect ambient lighting protects the subtle faded tones. We recommend measuring your wall carefully before selecting your display size. (Word count: 426)
