Completed in 1642 at the peak of Rembrandt van Rijn’s career in Amsterdam, The Night Watch (Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq) is widely recognized as the ultimate masterpiece of Dutch Golden Age painting. Breaking completely away from traditional, static military group portraits, Rembrandt depicted Captain Frans Banninck Cocq and his lieutenant leading their civic guardsmen into active motion. Renowned for its colossal size ($363 \times 437\text{ cm}$), intense Tenebrist chiaroscuro lighting, and brilliant composition, Rembrandt used sharp spotlights to illuminate key figures—such as the golden-clad young girl holding a dead chicken (a symbol of the guardsmen) and the captain’s extended hand casting a shadow across his lieutenant’s uniform. Housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, this painting stands as an enduring monument to Baroque innovation, movement, and psychological realism.
