Painted between 1918 and 1919 during his Early Years period (1917–1927), Portdogue (Port d’Alguer / Portdogue) belongs to the formative teenage series created by fourteen-to-fifteen-year-old Salvador Dalí. Portdogue (or Port d’Alguer) is an iconic coastal cove in Cadaqués, surrounded by rugged Catalan rock formations and Mediterranean waters. Influenced by French Post-Impressionism and local Catalan modernists, young Dalí applied rhythmic, deliberate brushstrokes and rich chromatic harmonies—juxtaposing warm ochres and sun-baked coastlines against crisp sky blues and shimmering sea reflections. This early landscape highlights the unique geological and coastal scenery of Cadaqués that remained an essential backdrop throughout Dalí’s lifetime.
