About this painting
This hand-painted oil interpretation recreates Willem de Kooning’s Woman and Bicycle, executed 1952–1953. One of the most celebrated works from his iconic Woman series, it merges a forceful female figure with explosive, overlapping painterly marks, refusing a clean divide between representation and abstraction. Painted in our Dafen artist studio, this is a painted reproduction, not an original artwork or print.
This painting belongs to de Kooning’s legendary Woman cycle from the early 1950s. A standing female figure anchors the centre of the canvas, yet her edges fray and dissolve into surrounding swathes of paint. The bicycle referenced in the title is barely discernible, submerged beneath stacked layers of strokes and scraped paint. De Kooning rejects the idea that abstraction and figure painting must be opposites; the form emerges and recedes within the field, charged with contradictory emotion — glamour, aggression, humour and raw vitality all coexisting on one surface. The work channels the visual language of 1950s pin‑up culture, then fractures it through unrestrained painterly attack.
Vibrant, Clashing Colour and Physical Mark-Making
The palette is vivid and unapologetic: acid greens, saturated yellows, hot reds and flesh tones collide across the support. Marks are built through brushing, scraping and layering, leaving visible traces of the artist’s physical action. There is no smooth blending or idealised beauty. Every stroke holds urgency, and colour functions not just to describe form, but to carry emotional friction.
Hand-Painted Translation of Layered, Textured Paint
Our Dafen studio artists capture the chaotic layering, scraping rhythm and volatile energy of the original canvas. Each hand‑applied mark preserves the improvisational quality of de Kooning’s process. No two hand‑painted versions will be identical; every canvas carries unique brush variation impossible for mechanical reproductions. This is a hand-painted interpretation, not Willem de Kooning’s original artwork, authorised edition or museum-certified piece.
Interior Styling Guidance
This iconic, high-impact mid-century abstract expressionist piece suits bold contemporary lofts, collector spaces and art-forward homes. It works powerfully as a single statement focal point above a large sofa, in an entry gallery or within a curated grouping of postwar American masterworks. Deep neutral or matte charcoal walls help contain its busy colour field without dulling its ferocious energy. Its commanding presence shifts with your selected canvas dimension.
