Fish (魚), executed in 1986, is a charming creature motif work by Yayoi Kusama. A streamlined, stylised fish form anchors the centre of the composition, its body segmented and densely decorated with rhythmic polka dots. The surrounding space is filled with her familiar tangled infinity-net linework. Naturalistic shading, water reflections and anatomical realism are discarded. The image becomes a hypnotic graphic field built on repeating circles and woven lines, embodying Kusama’s enduring obsession with infinite pattern.
Flat, Vibrant Screenprint Colour
This colour screenprint on paper uses solid, distinct blocks of colour with clean, sharp edges. There are no soft gradients, blended shadows or painterly tonal shifts. The visual impact comes from bold colour contrast, the orderly rhythm of dots and the intricate interlaced background netting. This flat graphic language is characteristic of Kusama’s screenprint works from this era, prioritising meditative pattern over naturalistic representation.
Hand-Painted Interpretation Focus
This hand-painted interpretation is not part of the original limited run of 75 numbered editions plus 8 artist proofs. Our painters replicate the fish silhouette, consistent dot scale and continuous infinity-net lines faithfully. We preserve the flat printed quality of screenprinting and avoid adding realistic volume, shadows or blurred brushwork that would break the original graphic aesthetic. Minor subtle variations in dot placement naturally appear in hand-painted work and separate it from machine prints.
Display Suggestions
This playful graphic artwork works wonderfully for contemporary, Japandi, pop-art and gallery-style interiors. Neutral walls in off-white, cream or light grey help the colourful fish motif stand out without visual conflict. Gentle, even ambient lighting is ideal; harsh directional spotlights may create glare and obscure the fine detail of the woven net patterns. Double-check your wall measurements before confirming your display size. (Word count: 382)
