Painted in 1918 during his Early Years period (1917–1927), Duck (Pato) represents fourteen-year-old Salvador Dalí’s rigorous exploration of classic Spanish realism. Before establishing his groundbreaking Surrealist style, young Dalí immersed himself in the academic study of 17th-century Spanish still life masters like Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Zurbarán. In this detailed still life study of game, Dalí painstakingly captured the tactile textures of plumed feathers, organic forms, and dramatic side-lighting. This early masterpiece reveals the deep foundational draftsmanship and photographic precision that later enabled Dalí to render his wild dreamscapes with unyielding realism.
