Painted in 1914, Dutch Interior (Interior holandés) reflects the astonishing art-historical intuition of ten-year-old Salvador Dalí. During his early school years in Figueres, Dalí spent hours studying classical art books and art prints, absorbing the light techniques of 17th-century Dutch masters like Johannes Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch. In this early Impressionist interpretation, young Dalí combines warm indoor chiaroscuro with loose, atmospheric brushwork, capturing sunlight filtering into a quiet domestic space. Decades before he visited Holland or famously revisited Dutch themes in his late career, this early study highlights Dalí’s lifelong reverence for European painting traditions.
