Painted in 1918 during his Early Years period (1917–1927), Portrait of Hortensia (Retrato de Hortensia) offers a captivating look into Salvador Dalí’s rapid stylistic evolution as a fourteen-year-old prodigy in Catalonia. Moving beyond classical realism and soft impressionistic outdoor light, Dalí engaged directly with Post-Impressionist technique—embracing structured brushwork, vivid color choices, and deliberate contour lines influenced by modern French and Catalan painters. The portrait captures the serene dignity of Hortensia through warm skin tones, rich background hues, and expressive oil textures, underscoring Dalí’s natural talent for human portraiture long before his surrealist career.
